Chocolate Cake covered with white fondant and decorated with gum paste flowers.
This was a double layer chocolate cake. I covered the cake with white fondant and placed decorations on the fondant with buttercream icing. The cake was two eight inch round cakes that were torted to make four layers. Each layer was separated with buttercream icing. The entire cake was iced with buttercream icing which was then covered with the fondant.
The flowers I used for decoration were made in advance to give the flowers time to dry. The flowers used were 3 pink carnations, 3 calla lilies, 1 pink rose and for-get-me-nots for filler. I also put on some green leaves. The flowers and leaves were made with gum paste, so they are hard and are not meant to be eaten. The ribbon curlicues were also made with gumpaste, which I rolled out and wound around dowels until they were dry. At the base of the cake, I put a white eyelet border for a touch of elegance.
